Showcase: Blood Angels Tactical Squad

It took me a long time but I finally finished the whole unit tonight. Glad to have it done. The way I paint my Blood Angels is time consuming and tedious.  But it's the way I did the whole army so I can't change it now.

I would still like a unit of Sternguard and probably 2 more drop pods to go with the army. Maybe a unit of Grav Gun bikes, but that's a lot of money and a lot of work.

Of course the unit is magnetized, with a lot of options. Usually this unit will go flamer/combi-flamer/heavy flamer.  Pretty potent.

Anyway, pics.

Also have melta and combi-melta options.

Power sword and bolt pistol. Maybe a power axe someday as well.

and lastly the finecast heavy flamer.

I don't have a lot to paint at all right now, but I will probably tackle the Death Company next including pulling off the backpacks and magnetizing the jump packs.  I should have waited for the new codex!  But to be honest I have had these guys built and primed for months.

On the bench: Commission test model - Icy Ork Goff biker

I'm going to be building and painting my cousin's Ork biker army. He came up with the idea of the blue skin, which I used on my Orcs & Goblins army, and he wants on his Ork army.

he's had the models for years, just sitting around, and finally wants them done.  Unlike my previous commissions which were paint only, these all came on the sprue.

I've built 12 of them so far, mixing in some choppas and sluggas from the Boys box for a bit of variety.

The contrast between the black armor and the light blue skin I think is just amazing. It's only a work in progress, but really only some detailing and a second layer on the skin is left. I chipped up the edges of the armor, but did it pre-wash. I think it needs to be done post-wash for a bit more brightness. I'll fix that.  I'm also not sold on the red belt on the rider. Lastly, I need a much lighter blue for the skin layer, I don't want to have to mix paints like I did with my Orcs.  The only GW one is an edge paint, and that might work if I didn't have to order it.  I'll see what my FLGS has from Vallejo and Badger.

I'm also steadily working on my Death Company models. But I really have not wanted to work on them much so building and painting the Ork bikers has been on the bench more then they have.

Anyway, that's it for tonight. Later!

Five more Death Company are done. I now have 15 ready to go.

These are the old metal models using plastics from the new kit, along with generic tactical bits.  I do have 5 more plastic DC, but I need to rip off the backpacks and magnetize them. I still like bolters over a pair of close combat weapons, so I'll continue to build them that way.

Next up is another commission.

Showcase: Thunderwolf Commission

Finished this guy in short order, only a few hours.  I would have to charge like 6x as much as I do to make as much as I do at work, and no way would it be worth it lol

Still, very happy how it came out.  Anyway, pics.

The fur was wet blended with 3 different greys but it does not show well after wash (even a thinned down wash) and drybrush.  Armor is The Fang with a blue wash and Fenrisian Grey highlight.

Another commission completed.

These guys are a real pain to paint, with all the surface detail on the armor.  Getting the back of the models wasn't as hard as I thought they would be.  But man, trying to paint the details without screwing up the yellow was seriously time consuming.

On the bench is more commission work, will post when those are complete!

Showcase: Vindicare Assassin

Pretty much just copied the paint job off the GW website.

Not much to say on this guy. I did look forward to it, as it's smaller then a space marine or Ork, so it was something different.

Now that's all done, off to the Sterngaurd I go!

Showcase: Blood Angels Sternguard

Finished the first five of my Blood Angels Sternguard, made from both the BA tactical box and the Sternguard box.   The combi-weapons are all magnetized.

A few comments. First, my remaining half-pot of Blood Red is acting weird, coming out chalky.  So I had to look for an alternative. I started with the GW recommended conversion, Evil Sunz Scarlet. Turns out, it's almost identical to my blood red paint! I was absolutely floored by how close the two colors are.

Blood Red has always been hard to work with being very translucent.  In the past I base coated with an easier to use color (usually Vallejo Bloody Red) and then just gave a very light coat of Blood Red to restore the color.

The Evil Sunz Scarlet is a much more opaque then the old Blood Red and reduced the painting time of the armor dramatically.  That's the main reason why they went faster then expected.  It also made covering up mistakes a non-issue.

Second, I really like the 32mm bases. Gives more room to make something interesting and combined with the cork I used makes the models much more impressive overall.  Am I going to rebase anything? Not in the Blood Angels but I might just rebase my Space Wolves to match the BA's lava bases instead of the Tau's swamp bases.

Anyway, pics.

Not exactly sure what project is next. I have the other 5 Sternguard to do or I might start in on some Nurgle Cultists..

Showcase: Ork-Summoned Bloodthirster

It's been sitting around a while, but I finally finished my Bloodthirster.

The models is a Reaper Bones deamon, and I think it works pretty darn well.  The idea is that it was summoned through the Possession psychic power but the wierdboy wasn't perfectly possessed.

Anyway I really like how it came out, and didn't take long sinee I abandoned the idea of blending all the highlights on the skin.

I'm good on my Orks and Blood Angels for now, so I'm diving into the Chaos allies for my Ork army.

Showcase: Nurgle Chaos Spawn

Finished up these guys so here are the pics!  Not much to say tonight. Busy painting.

Showcase: Nurgle Chaos Lord on bike.

As you may have noticed, I've done a lot of work on my Chaos this month. That's because I really want to get these guys on the table, painted for league play.

Next up is the Lord on bike, which will run with the spawn.

No more One eye open! rolls!

That, and I haven't picked up too much Ork stuff lately. I still want to get some meganobz but the shipping crap has made it hard to get stuff lately.

Also, I was able to get the last few Blood Angels models I needed in trades, so I got the 3 bikes and 2 drop pods for no cash layout.  Not bad!

Anyway, on to the Cultists.

LVO/BAO style list, or how to attack your local meta.

I have a ITC tournament coming up in May, and I finally found an Ork list I think can take on my local meta.

This isn't an all-comers list, but an anti-fucking-Knight list.  There are a lot more Knights around then just about anything else.

I have some work to do, mainly I still need 7 Meganobz but I think it will work for almost everything. I'll have trouble against multiple Helldrakes.

Combined Arms Detachment

1850 Exactly.

No, it's not a lot of models. No, it's not exactly what I want to play.  But it is alot of survivability, speed and hitting power.   I did pretty well in my last attempt with meganobz and boys, but I also had lootas and tracktor cannons.  I might have problems with multiple Dreadknights with the Ap4 flamer, but against knight titans I should do very well.  rock, paper, scissors of 40k..

IDICBeer's Terrain Square Competition build complete.

I've been working on stuff, just have not been posting much about it.

I painted up a pair of Iron Priests on Thunderwolves and an Imperial Fists Librarian on bike for commission, but didn't take any pics.

I've also picked up 6 more Meganobz and been working on those.

Anyway, I've finished building a pair of terrain pieces for IDICBeer's competition this year.

Water tower and pumping station.

Storage shed with crow's nets.

I have about 3 weeks to finish these and only took a few days to build.  Primer and paint soon.

Anyway I promise not to neglect the blog so much.

Plastic Painboy on bike conversion.

This model wasn't made to fit on a bike, and I had to hack off the legs and apron to get it to fit.

I still need to do some greenstuff work but it fits and looks great.

I turned the right arm a bit to clear the guns, and the rest of the model is untouched.

30 Warbikes. All with FNP.  *evil laugh*

Return to shooty Orks?

My league this month is lower points, only 1650. I wanted to try and see if shooty Orks can be a thing under the new book and 7th. Since the new book came out I've been moving more and more to close combat and speed builds with less overall shooting.

I built a list of nothing but shooting units..and of course the lucky stick. Never leave home without it.

Ork Horde Detachment
HQ: Warboss: pk, bp, lucky stuck, 'eavy armor
HQ: Painboy
HQ: Painboy
HQ: Mek

Troop: 30 'ard shootaboyz, 3 rokkets, nob w/PK&BP
Troop: 30 'ard shootaboyz, 3 rokkets, nob w/PK&BP
Troop: 10 grots

Elite: 10 tankbustas

Heavy: 15 lootas
Heavy: 3 KMK, runts
Heavy: 5 Lobba, runts
Aegis

I would have gone with 30 lootas, but decided on more mek guns instead.  The tankbustas make up for the lack of a 2nd unit of lootas.

Overall this is a lot of fun. The combination of the vast amount of shooting with the still formidable CC capabilities of the standard Ork boy makes this flexible and effective..but slow.  Depending on the type of shooting, there may not be enough bodies to get across the table..

Showcase: More Meganobz

Finished up the last box of Meganobz. I have built and painted 4 boxes of these guys to be able to run Ghazzy's Bullyboz.

Unlike the Bad Moon unit which is set, the other 7 guys are magnetized.

So that's it for now, more great content coming!

Rebuilding an old scratch built battlewagon.

$

So this is the first battlewagon I built, shortly after the 4th ed codex came out and before the official GW model.

It's far too wide and too low compared to the stock model. Being too wide makes it hard to deploy and too low means I might get accused of "modelling for advantage". Since I'm a player first, I strive to build all my stuff in line with GW stuff for game purposes.

Last night I tore the entire model apart and started rebuilding it into more of a playable size.

So an xacto knife, a bit of CA and a few hours later:

Other then a roll bar and a glyph from the trukk kit, it's entirely recycled from the original build.

I'm incredibly happy with it. It's the perfect size of just over 3" tall, just about 4" wide and about 8" long. I was thinking I would have to completely repaint it, but I might be able to get away with just touching it up, at least for now.

I didn't have much left over either!

So now I have 3 playable battlewagons to use for the Bully Boyz.  I plan on painting up a trukk in Bad Moonz to go along with the Meganobz next.

Abandon the old force org. All hail the new formations!

I wanted to try out something completely different tonight. Basically I wanted to play the BullyBoyz in just 1650pts with 3 battlewagons.

This took some doing, for sure.

After the 15 meganobz with wagons there is less then 650pts left. I couldn't really get in a sold CAD or Ork Horde, so I dug through formations to find something useful. And I found it.

After I had filled out the formation I had a few points left over, just enough for a bare minimum CAD.

This is the list I will play tonight:

Formation: Mogrok's Bossboys (The Red Waggh)
Big Mek (warlord)
-Megarmor
-KFF

Big Mek
-SAG

Big Mek
-KFF

Warboss
-Megarmor
-Lucky Stick

Wierdboy

Formation: Ghazghkull's Bully Boyz (Waggh Ghazghkull)
5 Meganobz
-1x Killsaws
Battlewagon, Ram, big shoota

5 Meganobz
-1x Killsaws
Battlewagon, Ram, big shoota

5 Meganobz
-1x Killsaws
Battlewagon, Ram, big shoota

Detachment: Combined arms
HQ: Painboy

This will be the fastest deployment ever for me!

Showcase: Icy Ork Goff Bikers

Another finished commission.  This time a full unit of Icy Ork bikers with a painboy.

Some of the models have Spellcrow resin heads. They don't fit perfectly on bikes and will work much better on infantry. Some of them just don't fit at all.

I will be using them for a few games and tournaments, as a 2nd unit next to my own bikes.

Tomorrow: another completed commission.

Showcase: House Hawkshroud Knight Titans

$

A big commission is now complete (but still one more to go) of a pair of Knight Titans done up in House Hawkshroud colors.

They turned out absolutely amazing and I'm so very happy.  Yellow was done the same way as always: base of Ushabi Bone with layers of Lamenter's Yellow glaze.  The glaze was thinned down and done in only 2 layers as the customer wanted a lighter yellow then the Imperial Fists bikes I did.

After all that was done then came the decals with lots of Micro-Sol.  However I have to say the decals with this kit are just fantastic.  Thick enough not to break but not so thick as to be hard to work with.  Almost no flash around the image as well making it very easy for the areas the decal touches the raised trim.

Anyway, pics!
